-ONE WEEK INTO THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS-

Le 29 mars, je me suis envolée pour New York City, ville que j'ai déjà eu la chance de visiter il y a plusieurs années en colonie de vacances quand j'avais 17 ans environ. Cette fois, je suis seule avec un programme extrêmement chargé car 7 jours dans cette ville énorme n'est clairement pas suffisant mais je compte bien optimiser chaque seconde.

On March 29, I flew to New York City, which I had the chance to visit several years ago in a summer camp when I was about 17. This time, I’m alone with an extremely busy program because 7 days in this huge city is clearly not enough but I intend to optimize every second.

Tout d'abord, je vais vous parler de mon hôtel, ce qui est l'une des informations les plus importantes que vous recherchez sur mon blog si vous souhaitez partir à New York : le HI New York City Hostel situé dans l'Upper West Side, à deux pas de Central Park et collé à la station de métro 103rd Street sur la ligne 1, la meilleure ligne de la ville qui conduit à presque toutes les attractions principales.

C'est la même auberge dans laquelle j'étais la première fois où je suis venue à New York et franchement, elle s'est même améliorée en l'espace de 5 ans. Des chambres spacieuses comparées à d'autres auberges, des douches et sanitaires plutôt grands, des lavabos et miroirs parfaits pour se maquiller, une petite cafétéria pour déjeuner et manger (je suis tombée amoureuse de leurs muffins bananes/noix) et un personnel au top. Tout ça avec les prix parmis les moins chers de Manhattan. Je vous la recommande à 100%.

First of all, I will tell you about my hotel, which is one of the most important information you are looking for on my blog if you want to go to New York: the HI New York City Hostel located in the Upper West Side, Steps from Central Park and pasted to 103rd Street subway station on line 1, the best line in town that leads to almost all major attractions.

This is the same hostel I was in when I first came to New York and frankly, it even improved within 5 years. Spacious rooms compared to other hostels, rather large showers and toilets, sinks and mirrors perfect for makeup, a small cafeteria for lunch and eat (I fell in love with their muffins bananas/ nuts) and staff at the top. All this with the cheapest prices in Manhattan. I recommend it 100%.

Concernant mes découvertes et (re)-découvertes, je vais vous faire un petit résumé de chacune des journées que j'ai essayé de diviser par quartier afin de tout voir et ne pas trop me déplacer (raté, car j'ai fait en moyenne 25 000 pas par jour malgré le métro, préparez de bonnes chaussures) :

Regarding my discoveries and (re)-discoveries, I will give you a small summary of each day that I tried to divide by neighborhood in order to see everything and not move too much (failed because I took an average of 25,000 steps a day despite the subway, make good shoes):

• Le dimanche 30 mars, je débute ma semaine par marcher de l'hôtel Empire (de Gossip Girl), jusqu'à Time Square. Malheureusement, je suis sous une vraie journée hivernale (5 degrés, brouillard gâchant toute la vue et vous verrez que la météo en Avril est plus que changeante là-bas). Je continue ma balade à la New York Public Library (lieu de tournage de Sex and the City), à la gare de Central Station (lieu de tournage de Gossip Girl) puis au Rockefeller Center où j'étais censée monter mais le brouillard m'en a empêché. Pour me consoler, je vais fabriquer ma propore peluche au Build-a-Bear Workshop avant de passer voir le Flatiron Building (en rénovation) et une exposition sur le New Yorker à la NY Public Library.

On Sunday, March 30th, I start my week by walking from the Empire Hotel (from Gossip Girl), to Time Square. Unfortunately, I am under a real winter day (5 degrees, fog spoiling the view and you will see that the weather in April is more than changing there). I continue my walk to the New York Public Library (location of Sex and the City), to the station of Central Station (location of Gossip Girl) then to the Rockefeller Center where I was supposed to climb but the fog prevented me. To console myself, I will make my own plush at the Build-a-Bear workshop before visiting the Flatiron Building (under renovation) and an exhibition on the New Yorker in the NY Public Library.

• Le lundi 31 mars, le temps s'améliore doucement (quelques gouttes le matin et un grand soleil combiné à la chaleur l'après-midi). Je débute mes visites à la maison de Carrie Bradshaw à West Village. Je me balade ensuite au Financial District jusqu'au taureau de Wall Street avant de filer au mémorial du 9/11 et visiter le musée de cette journée qui a traumatisée le monde entier. En sortant, la One World Trade Center m'accueille sous un grand soleil. Je file donc rapidement au sommet de l'Empire State Building pour profiter de ma première vue sur la Big Apple.

On Monday, March 31, the weather is slowly improving (a few drops in the morning and a great sun combined with heat in the afternoon). I begin my visits to Carrie Bradshaw’s house in the West Village. Then I walk through the Financial District to the bull of Wall Street before heading to the 9/11 memorial and visit the museum of that day which traumatized the whole world. When I leave, the One World Trade Center welcomes me under a great sun. So I quickly go to the top of the Empire State Building to enjoy my first view of the Big Apple.

• Le mardi 1er avril, c'est un nouveau mois qui débute avec un ciel parfaitement bleu (mais frais) sur la ville. Je pars plutôt que prévu pour ma première balade à Central Park qui m'emmène jusqu'au Metropolitan Museum of Art (le MET) et ses marches iconiques (décor de Gossip Girl). Après deux heures à visiter ce superbe musée, je reprends ma balade ensoleillée dans Central Park afin de me rendre de nouveau au Rockefeller Center et cette fois, pouvoir monter au sommet, pas de brouillard en vue pour tout gâcher. Une fois revenue sur terre, je descends la 5ème Avenue pour finir à Central Park et l'une de ses plus belles vues sur les gratte-ciel.

On Tuesday, April 1st, it is a new month that begins with a perfectly blue (but cool) sky over the city. I leave rather than planned for my first walk in Central Park which takes me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the MET) and its iconic steps (set of Gossip Girl). After two hours of visiting this beautiful museum, I take my sunny walk in Central Park to go again to the Rockefeller Center and this time, be able to climb to the top, no fog in sight to spoil everything. Once back on land, I go down 5th Avenue to end up in Central park and one of its most beautiful views of the skyscrapers.

• Le mercredi 02 avril, je suis de nouveau réveillée sous un ciel bleu absolument superbe, direction le spot photo le plus célèbre de la ville : Dumbo et sa vue sur le Manhattan Bridge. Petit détour au Pier 1 qui offre une magnifique vue sur Manhattan et le One World Trade Center. La traversée du Brooklyn Bridge à pied est une obligation et je me dirige vers le téléphérique de Roosevelt Island (oui oui, il y a un téléphérique dans New York, c'est gratuit et vraiment sympa!). Petit tour rapide de Roosevelt Island grâce au bus gratuit disponible sur l'île puis retour sur la terre ferme car j'ai rendez-vous à l'Edge Observatory pour une nouvelle vue inédite sur la ville. Cependant, la météo a changé entre-temps, le brouillard est apparu et ma montée au sommet est une fois de plus annulée (maudit brouillard). Le ciel est gris, le froid polaire est revenu, je me rabats sur la balade de la High Line avant de rentrer au chaud.

On Wednesday, April 2nd, I woke up again under an absolutely beautiful blue sky, heading for the most famous photo spot in the city: Dumbo and its view of the Manhattan Bridge. Small detour to Pier 1 which offers a magnificent view of Manhattan and the One World Trade Center. Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge on foot is a must and I’m heading to the cable car of Roosevelt Island (yes, there is a cable car in New York, it’s free and really nice!). Quick tour of Roosevelt Island thanks to the free bus available on the island and back on land because I have an appointment at the Edge Observatory for a new view of the city. However, the weather has changed in the meantime, fog appeared and my climb to the summit is once again cancelled (damn fog). The sky is grey, the polar cold has returned, I’m on the High Line before returning to warm.

• Le jeudi 03 avril, la journée la plus moche de ma semaine à base de pluie continue et brouillard. Heureusement pour moi, j'ai rencontré un guide touristique qui m'emmène faire une visite guidée privée du Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). En ressortant, la pluie est toujours présente (ainsi qu'une forte chaleur, loin des 5 degrés de mon arrivée). Je me dirige au Fashion Institute of Technology, la plus grande école de mode du monde après celle de Londres et qui propose plusieurs expositions gratuites et ouvertes au public. Sous l'humidité, je finis ma journée avec un délicieux matcha à la fraise à Central Park.

Thursday, April 3, the worst day of my week based on continuous rain and fog. Luckily for me, I met a tour guide who took me on a private guided tour of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). As I come out, the rain is still present (and a strong heat, far from the 5 degrees of my arrival). I’m heading to the Fashion Institute of Technology, the world’s largest fashion school after London, which offers several free exhibitions open to the public. Under the humidity, I end my day with a delicious strawberry matcha in Central Park.

• Le vendredi 04 avril, j'ai de la chance car malgré une grosse journée de pluie annoncée, aucune goutte ne me tombe dessus et on perçoit quelques fois le soleil et le ciel bleu qui tentent de se frayer un chemin parmi les nuages. Direction la Statue de la Liberté et Ellis Island ! Je profite que le ciel continue de se dégager pour enfin monter au sommet de l'Edge Obsrvatory et admirer la ville vue du haut pour la dernière fois.

On Friday 4th of April, I am lucky because despite a big day of rain announced, no drop falls on me and we perceive a few times the sun and the blue sky trying to make its way through the clouds. Head for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island! I take advantage that the sky continues to clear to finally climb to the top of the Edge Obsrvatory and admire the city seen from above for the last time.

• Le samedi 05 avril, la ville est aussi triste que moi de me voir partir et pleure toutes les larmes qu'elle possède. Je vais me balader à Little Italy et Chinatown mais la pluie et le froid sont trop violents. Je rentre prendre ma valise et me dirige à l'aéroport, absolument épuisée mais jamais aussi heureuse qu'à ce moment.

On Saturday, April 5, the city is as sad as I am to see me go and cries all the tears it has. I’m going for a walk in Little Italy and Chinatown but the rain and cold are too violent. I go home to take my suitcase and head to the airport, absolutely exhausted but never as happy as at that moment.

Malgré une météo assez capricieuse (et franchement je ne me plains pas ça aurait pu être bien pire), je recommande vraiment de partir à cette période là. Relativement peu de touriste, j'étais presque seule au sommet de l'Empire State Building, la Statue de la Liberté n'était pas remplie et je pouvais respirer partout où j'allais. Ça reste New York, il y a du monde partout et tout le temps mais franchement, ce n'était pas aussi oppressant que pourrais l'être un mois d'Août ou une période de vacances :)

Despite a rather capricious weather (and frankly I do not complain it could have been much worse), I really recommend to leave at this time. Relatively few tourists, I was almost alone at the top of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty was fine and I could breathe everywhere I went. It’s still New York, there are people everywhere, all the time but frankly it was not as oppressive as could be a month of August or a holiday period :)
